Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard (BESS) Update

Posted on July 23, 2017

Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard (BESS) Update – The Built Environment Sustainability Scorecard (BESS) is an assessment tool used by the majority of Melbournian councils in Victoria to assess sustainability credentials at planning stage of a development. It was designed specifically to support the SDAPP (Sustainable Design Assessment in the Planning Process) to provide a consistent and streamlined assessment process. BESS will replace STEPS and SDS, with a transition period before STEPS and SDS are phased out – by end of August 2016. For new projects, we encouraged our all clients to use BESS.

If you are undertaking project work within a council that is a BESS subscriber, it is now mandatory that the tool be used to quantify performance. The current list of member councils can be found here.

Sustainability House can assist in undertaking BESS assessments for any type and size of development (whether residential or commercial), helping you to navigate through the requirements of the tool. We can also undertake daylight modelling, STORM calculations, Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), Waste Management Plans (WMP), Sustainable Design Assessments (SDA) and Sustainable Management Plan (SMP) reports.
